Childproofing Your Electrical Outlets

Over 2,400 children in the United States visit the emergency room each year with injuries related to electrical outlets. This is why, since 2008, homes with young children are required to use tamper-resistant receptacles. Children are inherently curious, and electrical outlets are tempting to explore, as they almost look like little, animated faces, and are unknown commodities. Even when you’re home, you can’t keep both eyes on your kids at all times. This is great for children under 4 years of age.

Box Outlet Covers

Box outlet covers are ideal for outlets in your home that are frequently used. This type of tamper-resistant receptacle fits over your outlets, and the plugs going into them, to create a protective box. This makes it impossible for children to reach the outlet, or pull the cords of items plugged into them. This childproofing method is extremely effective, as they are screwed into your wall. This is a great option for protecting all ages.

Sliding Outlet Covers

These outlet covers include a retractable surface that is baby-safe. When you need to plug something in, you will have to push the face of this device over to one side to access your outlet. When unplugging an item, the face of the device will automatically snap back into its protective position, covering your outlet. Although this is effective, as kids get older they will be able to operate the device, eliminating the safety protection. These outlet covers will guard children under the age of 6.

All of these tamper-resistant receptacles are affordable and easy to install. Take the time to place them on all of the outlets throughout your home.
