5 Things Every Plumber Wants You to Know

At some point down the road, each and every person will need a plumber to repair a leak or service a fixture. However, there are people that end up calling the plumber dozens of times per year for repairs that could have been avoided altogether. Here are few things your plumber wants you to know so you can keep your plumbing healthy.

  1. Grease Be Gone – After you’re done frying chicken cutlets or a few slices of bacon, DO NOT pour the grease and oil down the drain. This grease will cool and solidify within your pipes, creating blockages as other debris get pushed down the drain. Instead, pour this grease in a jar or container and throw it out.
  2. Out From Under – Underneath the sink has always been a classic spot in the house for storing cleaning materials and miscellaneous items. Relocate these items to a closet or cabinet to avoid having anything knock into the pipes underneath the sink. Pipes can be bumped out of place, which can lead to leaks and eventual mold.
  3. Trash Can Sink – Having a garbage disposal means you can grind up select food and allow it to be washed down the drain. The keyword here is “select” because you should not be throwing all kinds of food and garbage down the disposal like it’s a second trash can. However, when you do flush down some food debris, make sure you keep the sink running.
  4. Shut It Down – Before heading off to a marvelous vacation, run to your main water valve first. Shut the water off via this main valve in case a leak occurs or a plumbing fixture breaks unexpectedly. The last thing you need after a week long trip is to come home to a foot of water in the basement.
  5. Toilet Etiquette – The number one rule of a toilet is to only flush toilet paper and the usual number one and two. Avoid flushing anything else, like cotton swabs, paper towels, hair, feminine hygiene products, gum, etc. Toilet paper is designed to break up after being soaked in water – all other items are not and will lead to eventual clogs.
