7 Extension Cord Safety Tips You Need to Know

Have you ever set up a room just the way you like it and then realized you can’t plug anything into the outlets because they’re too far away? Naturally, your first reaction is to plug in an extension cord, but should you really do this? Before you go plugging in a million different cords, brush up on your extension cord safety knowledge.

  1. Extension cords are meant to be temporary and should not be left plugged in all day and night for weeks on end. These cords are not meant to replace the job of your home’s actual wiring.
  2. If you find yourself using extensions cords often and in more than one room, you might need to install more outlets in your home. Whether you don’t have enough or if they’re poorly positioned, consider adding another outlet or two in each room.
  3. Inspect all extension cords before use. Frayed or damaged cords can easily spark and cause an electrical fire. Dispose of any that are not in good condition.
  4. Leave all extensions cord exposed to allow the heat to escape. Covering electrical cords can result in a costly fire.
  5. If you need to plug an appliance into an extension cord, do not plug anything else into it. Household appliances tend to use a lot of energy and extension cords should never be over utilized.
  6. Check to see if your extension cord has a high enough wattage rating for whatever you’re plugging into it. Never use one that has a lower rating than what you need, or else a house fire could be in your future.
  7. If you need to use an extension cord outside, make sure it is made for outside use. Even if your cord is meant to be used outside, try not to use it while it’s raining.

Knowing how to properly use extension cords can be the difference between everything being perfectly okay and your home experiencing an electrical fire.
