7 Simple Things to Do Before a Long Vacation
Going on vacation is one of the greatest feelings ever, especially when it’s one you’ve planned for a long time. However, the vacation shouldn’t be the only thing you plan – the day leading up to the vacation should be included too. This day is meant for you to make sure your home is prepped for your extended absence.
- Lessen the Laundry – Don’t leave dirty clothes sitting in hampers for days at a time, things can get stinky. Take some time to do a few loads of laundry beforehand so there’s less for you to do upon your return – and so there are more options for you to pack.
- Prepare the Plants – Indoor plants are great for decoration and helping improve indoor air quality. Make sure each one is properly watered before you head out, or inquire about self-watering devices.
- Focus on Fragrance – Don’t you want to come back to a home that smells clean and pleasant? Replace any air fresheners that are running low before they run out.
- Arrange Animal Housing- For those with pets, make some calls to see who can watch your pets for you. Options include having someone come over to check on and feed your pets, bringing your pets to a friend or family member’s house, or using an overnight kennel.
- Food in the Fridge – Check your refrigerator and throw out or eat any items that will go bad during your absence. Leaving these items to expire in your refrigerator can cause mold to grow and odors to form.
- Leaving on a Light – While away, make sure you have at least one light on during the nighttime. Use a timer to keep a light illuminated for any pets that stay home and to ward off burglars. Motion sensor lights should also be utilized for driveways.
- Thermostat Tweaks – Make sure your thermostat is on an optimal setting for your home specific to the time of year (lower during cooler months and higher during warmer months). If the weather is neither too hot nor too cold, you can feel safe leaving the HVAC system off altogether.
