Are you sniffling and sneezing with each passing day? Living with allergies can be a miserable time for weeks on end, but there are things you can do to make sure the allergens that affect you aren’t inside of your home. There’s no reason you should be forced to live with your allergies when you’re under the roof of your own home.
New Air Filters
Replacing your HVAC system’s air filters routinely is necessary, but sometimes you need to take it a step further. For those living with bad allergies, you might have to upgrade to higher quality filters. The higher the MERV rating, the more allergens and particles the filter will catch. Aim to purchase filters with a MERV rating of at least an eight and replace them as often as the information label says to. The better the filter, the less often you have to replace it.
Did you have your HVAC system serviced this year? Each year your air conditioner and your furnace should both be serviced at the start of the season when you typically begin to use them (spring and fall). Allowing a certified technician inspect, service, and repair your unit will ensure it will work properly for the upcoming season. Failing to service your HVAC system will result in lower efficiency and a higher risk of being exposed to indoor allergens.
Air Duct Cleanings
When was the last time you had your home’s ductwork cleaned? If the answer is more than two years ago, you’re long overdue for a duct cleaning. Dust, moisture, mold, pollen, and other allergens that circulate throughout your home can be found on the surface of your home’s ductwork. Removing this dust, mold, and other particles can immediately help you and your allergy problems. However, it is recommended you use a professional service to fully remove ALL dust, not just the dust seen in the first foot of the air vent.
Keeping allergens out of your home is extremely simple, you just have to know where they hide and how to catch them!
