How Under Cabinet Lighting is Installed

Are you interested in adding additional lighting to your kitchen? Under cabinet lighting is a great option as it allows you to better see the food you’re preparing, while even adding a slight ambiance when they’re the only lights on. To install under cabinet lighting, make sure you hit each one of these steps.

Step 1: Once you have gathered all of your lighting and materials, place each light on the countertop below the space you would like it installed. Begin linking them with the proper electrical cables.

Step 2: Begin screwing in the mounting templates to the desired locations underneath the cabinets. Make sure the cables are tight enough not to dangle, but with an appropriate amount of slack.

Step 3: Once each light is installed, check to see if the lights are successfully hidden from plain sight. If you can view the lights and wires from a normal standing position, install a wooden light rail. This will further hide your new lighting system while also adding an accent to your cabinets.

Step 4: If each light is in the correct spot, you can now use cable staples to secure them into place. Keep wires stapled toward the front of cabinets so they have a better chance of remaining out of sight.

Step 5: Open up the lights and install the bulbs. For those choosing xenon bulbs, remember to never touch the bulbs with your bare fingers as this will damage them.

Step 6: Under cabinet lighting can be plugged into an outlet or it can be hardwired into a light switch and dimmer set. If it’s plugged in, the first light in the series can turn on and off every other light connected. However, for hard wiring under cabinet lighting, you’ll need to call an electrician to install a new light switch to control it.
